This course explores the contemporary history of refugees in the United States through the lens of urban history. We will discuss how cities from San Francisco to Des Moines, Iowa responded to refugees since 1945, explore how refugee communities fought for their rights and remade neighborhoods between east coast and west coast, and ask what lessons and broader insights the history of the sanctuary city movement since the 1980s may offer. Please note that a sizable portion of the course is built around a research-based approach which will ask you to develop your own research project on refugee cities.
