SoSe 22: Kant’s account of taste. An introduction to the Critique of the Aesthetic Power of Judgment
Elena Romano
Kommentar
The Critique of the Aesthetic Power of Judgment is the first part of Kant’s third Critique. In this text, Kant analyses the conditions of judgments of taste and addresses the notions of the beautiful, the sublime and the genius. During the seminar, we will read the most significant parts of the Critique of the Aesthetic Power of Judgment to gain an overview of text and of Kant’s account of taste. Contrary to the common view according to which everyone has her own taste and hence that there can be no fruitful disputing about it, Kant holds that taste is not a merely subjective capacity to judge. In this regard, the problem of the validity of judgments of taste will be central to our reading and it will represent the key to connecting Kant's critique of taste to the main problems of his transcendental philosophy.
