SoSe 22: Revolutionary Ideas in 19th-century Europe

The 19 century, rightly dubbed by numerous historians 'the age of revolution', was marked by subsequent waves of social revolutions and popular unrest sweeping over the continent. All the movements behind given upheavals strived to describe the sociopolitical reality in a new way, coining, for this reason, specific metaphors, concepts, and all-encompassing discourses. The crucial aim of the proposed course is to delve into the matter in order to identify crucial 19th-century revolutionary ideas (mainly coming from liberal, republican, and socialist discourses), as well as to discuss their significance and meaning within a time when they became crucial factors influencing and formatting social imagination. Beginning from the seminal revolutionary tripartite motto: liberty, equality, fraternity, through rebellions ignited 'for our freedom and yours', up to passionate passages against the imperialist and war formulated just before the First World War - the course participants will read and discuss a broad spectrum of revolutionary ideas, that to a high extent shaped our contemporary world.
