SoSe 22: Contemporary US-American Poetry

The field of contemporary US-American poetry is shaped by a broad range of themes and experiences articulated by authors from diverse backgrounds. Asian, Native and African American, Latinx, or queer white authors address issues such as violence and racism, body and sexuality, loss and grief, migration and transnational multilingualism or climate change and environmental devastation. They engage in formal experiments ranging from language poetry to transmedia performance and thus negotiate innovative styles of writing. In this seminar, we will engage in a series of close readings on works by Ocean Vuong, Don Mee Choi and some others. Selection of material will be based on (but not limited to) books that were published within the last six years and received (or were finalists for) prestigious awards such as the National Book Award for Poetry or the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. While I may suggest a set of texts in the seminar plan, we will openly consider interests articulated in the seminar group and determine our course itinerary together. In preparation, you may explore recent publications by, among others, Tommye Blount, Jericho Brown, Natalie Diaz, Tyehimba Jess, Forrest Gander, Lee Ann Roripaugh or Arthur Sze.
