SoSe 22: The Global History of the German Empire from the Margins
Minu Haschemi Yekani
Kommentar
On the mental and geopolitical maps, the German Empire's borders were marked by continuous instability: On the one hand, there were Prussia's eastern borders and, on the other, the colonies in Africa, the South Pacific islands, and the settlement on China's southern coast. In the mainland/metropolis, however, the so-called "culture wars" created inner borders before the turn of the century, supplemented by the articulation of anti-Semitic, anti-Slavic, anti-Socialist, and misogynistic discourses. The seminar should be understood as a collaborative learning group to focus on some of these spatial, cultural, and political (dis)entanglements and understand and learn about the power structures aligned with the terminology of racisms and other structural forms of exclusion and discrimination.
Students are expected to be willing to give input; to participate orally and in writing, individually and in groups. The idea is to deal with topics in a more immersed way. I want us to concentrate on interpreting texts and understand the analytical or conceptual terminology, which means the seminar will emphasize "depth" more than the content-related range. In other words: An affection or an openness to methods such as "close reading" is appreciated. (If you prefer a broad thematic overview and are bored with precise text work, which is fine!, this might, however, not be the right course for you.) There will also be room for methodological questions of scientific work and writing a research paper.
