Seminar
SoSe 22: Martyrs and Ascetics, Holy Texts and Holy Bodies – The Christian Cult of Saints from the 3rd to the 7th Century
Michael Wolfgang Eber
Comments
The seminar will provide an introduction to the emergence of veneration of Christian saints in late antiquity. Saints, whether present as living persons, as relics, or even as figures of thought, have shaped Christian life for centuries since late antiquity. The different embodiments of sainthood will allow for further insights into constructions of corporeality and gender in late antiquity; the manifold forms of writing sainthood - in historical works, martyr's passions, saints' vitae, letters and inscriptions - will enable students to handle a broad spectrum of different (late) antique source genres in a critical and scholarly manner.
