In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, prison uprisings have taken place in Germany and across the globe. Although prison protests have received increasing academic attention, the recent wave of uprisings is still poorly understood. This research project thus investigates the connection between the pandemic and prison activism. What are the reasons behind the protests and why were specific protest tactics chosen? How did varying responses to COVID-19 by prison authorities shape the protests?
Participants will familiarize themselves with contemporary literature on prison protests, formulate research questions, and, if possible, conduct interviews with prison protesters. This research project is designed for an interdisciplinary group of students from the humanities and the social sciences at the end of their Bachelor’s degree or in their Masters.
The group’s first meeting will take place in person, depending on COVID restrictions.
