WiSe 12/13: Ethnicity and Nationalism: Identity, Conflict and Intervention
Majda Ruge
Kommentar
The aim of the seminar is to a) introduce the students to key concepts and relevant theoretical debates in the field of ethnicity and nationalism b) familiarise the students with variety of nationalist projects and self-determination movements (violent and nonviolent) by way of case studies and c) examine how different theoretical assumptions about identity and nationalism translate into concrete policy efforts in practice. Here, special focus will be given to the role of external actors in promoting inter-ethnic accommodation, whether protection of minority rights or more ambitious state-building projects in post-conflict societies. The seminar will thus explore both the theoretical approaches to nationalism and examine its various manifestations in practice, familiarising students with the key debates, challenges and/or prospects for successful management of ethnic diversity.
