WiSe 12/13: Arab Cultural Studies

Ihab Saloul

Comments

The aim of this seminar is to bring different scholarly perspectives to bear on the new politics of culture in the Arab world in light of the ongoing sociopolitical transformations. The seminar is situated on the terrain of cultural studies and critical theory - an eclectic tradition with a strong presence internationally that does not really exist as an academic discipline. The objective is not so much to focus our energies on discussing what institutional form this discipline could take here. Rather, the idea is reflect on the relationships between cultural practices and the lived experiences of the Arab world. In this regard, we will use cultural studies and critical theory as collective terms to explore various contemporary themes and political preoccupations of Arab culture such as identity, nationalism, gender, popular culture, East-West interactions, and the possibilities of dialogue across diverse cultural traditions. close
