WiSe 12/13: S-Language Change II: Historical English Syntax
Klaus Dietz
Comments
The course centres on the evolution of the syntax of Present Day English. As Modern English syntax mostly began to develop in Middle English the course will start from these beginnings, but in some cases it will be necessary to go back to Old English. Special emphasis will be laid on the process of standardization in Early and Late Modern English (1500-1800). The discussion will concentrate upon structurally momentous developments in the fields of nominal and verbal syntax. They include among others the formation of composite tenses (perfect, pluperfect, future), of modal auxiliaries and of relative constructions, the development of the Progressive (Expanded) Form, the evolution of personal passive constructions and of do-support and the fixing of word-order.
The purpose of the course will be the acquisition of a deepened knowledge on the field of historical English syntax and the practice of linguistic methods of syntactic analysis.
Participants will receive a list of those subjects which will be discussed in detail and a bibliography of the relevant handbooks and grammatical studies.
