This course is designed to provide an overview over English poetry of the 16th and 17th centuries. We will study a selection of poems by Sir Philip Sidney, William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser and Lady Mary Wroth. Apart from analyzing their respective themes, genres and structures, this class will be concerned with their rhetorical traditions and contemporary contexts.
