WiSe 12/13: Introduction to Cultural Theory
Hannah Spahn
Comments
“One of the two or three most complicated words in the English language,” in Raymond Williams’s oft-quoted phrase, culture today is ubiquitous in many contexts both inside and outside the university, yet (or rather, and) notoriously difficult to define. This seminar offers an entry into the analytical study of this complex subject, providing a clearer sense of the different conceptions of culture that are explicit or implicit in the great variety of approaches we encounter in our field. We will discuss foundational theorists and central debates around such topics as ideology, hegemony, identity, cosmopolitanism, and diaspora, asking, specifically, how they can become productive for the understanding of American culture in a globalized world. The seminar will be held in English. close
