WiSe 12/13: Qualitative Comparative Analysis
Christian Brzinsky-Fay
Comments
In general, the comparison of countries or regimes suffers from the Small-N problem. Regression models suffer from the low number of potential observations and, as a result, they do not produce valid and reliable results. Additionally, institutional effects are complex in nature, which means that each single institution is embedded in a systematic structure ("regime") of many institutions unfolding effects on individuals in combination with each other. In the methodological literature, this is known as the problem of complex causality and regression models with their additive logic have limitations.
The seminar's objective is, first, to provide an introduction to the method of "Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA)" and, second, to apply the method practically. The participants are invited to present their own projects and/or data sets, on which can be worked on. For this purpose, it is necessary that the participants should have basic knowledge in statistics and the use of the software package Stata.
