Comments
The seminar deals with the most important theoretical foundations of educational and
labor market sociology, covering the sociological and economic mechanisms that
structure people’s transitions to and placements on the labor market. Course
readings address important theoretical positions and empirical findings from
different countries in Europe and North America. International comparisons will be
used to reveal the institutional frameworks that govern training and labor market
opportunities. Furthermore, course discussion will focus on how to match research
questions with theoretical foundations, modes of operationalization and empirical
analysis. This may serve as a preparation for writing a masters’s thesis, for
example.
Many course readings include findings of quantitative, statistical studies that will
also be discussed in the seminar.
