WiSe 12/13: Reading as a Writer
Andrew Sean Greer
Comments
The course is very simply arranged: the first day of class is about The Word. The last day is about The Novel. Everything else builds from one to the next, so that the students will be able to read a novel as a writer - that is, finding word and sentence and paragraph choices - the close reading that is so hard with great plot and character, yet so essential. The only assignments will be creative writings exercises inspired by the close readings. As I have to begin teaching in Iowa on Jan 22nd, the last class for this course will be January 16th. All reading materials except the novels will be provided in class (from single words to entire stories. All students should acquire the following books by the middle of the course:
Ingalls, Rachel. Mrs. Caliban.
Maxwell, William. So Long See You Tomorrow.
Sedaris, David (editor). Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules
