WiSe 12/13: Pluricentricity and Pluricentric Languages

Gerhard Leitner

Comments

English is the international language per se. It has far more non-native speakers than native speakers who tend to communicate in the absence of native speakers. It is used on all conti-nents and dominates such domains as international relations and politics, science and technol-ogy, international conferences, the finance and economic domains, the aid industry and many others. It has some sort of official status in more than forty countries. It is the language most parents think is the most essential one for the next generations. As a result of global demand and the history of spread during colonialism, it has generated many national varieties around the world, the so-called Englishes. They are proof of the pluricentricity of the language. English is not the only language that is pluricentric and used worldwide. French, Spanish and Portuguese are similar due to colonialism, German and Italian are pluricentric as they are used in neighbouring states. Chinese is pluricentric due to migrations in Asian states. This seminar will investigate pluricentricitiy and pluricentric languages, explore educational consequences and widen the perspective to plurilingualism – the use of several languages in some region. close
