WiSe 15/16: Eurasian Integration: Between Political Power and Economic Interests?
Alexander Libman
Kommentar
Eurasian regionalism has been virtually neglected by both scholars and European politicians for decades, and for good reasons - although post-Soviet states repeatedly established regional organizations with various ambitious goals, the actual results of this effort remained limited. The creation of the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia in 2010 and of the Eurasian Economic Union in 2015 became an important landmark for the Eurasian integration: new structures have an important influence on the economic policy of their members, which at the same time have extremely divergent points of view on how these organizations should develop. Russian effort to convince Ukraine to join the Eurasian Economic Union became one of the steps leading to the current deep crisis in the relations between Russia and the EU. The goal of the seminar is to discuss the current state and the future of the Eurasian integration from various perspectives. While these perspectives are typically discussed in isolation from each other, the seminar intends to compare these perspectives in terms of both their ability to explain the development of Eurasian organizations, their predictions regarding the future of the region and their implications for the EU. We will look, for example, at the role of Soviet legacies and external actors (EU and China), analyze the Eurasian project from the point of view of comparative regionalism and autocracy promotion literature, discuss it as an outcome of Russian imperial ambitions, of economic interests of post-Soviet companies Schließen
