WiSe 17/18: Venice and the Mediteranean World
Daniela Hacke
Kommentar
This seminar explores the history of Venice and its empire in the Mediterranean from the Middle Ages until the late eighteenth century. Rather than approaching the complex history of Venice chronologically, we will sample and critically discuss diverse approaches that have been applied by historians in order to research the history of the city and the Republic of Venice. We will start with readings that explore specific themes such as “space”, “gender” and “families”, focusing more clearly on the history of the city itself. In the second half of the seminar we will expand our scope of analysis by exploring the images of the Venetian empire as they emerge from the different literature and look at the exemplary histories of women and men that lived in Venice and the Mediterranean world.
