WiSe 19/20: Cultural Encounters in the Early Modern World: Concepts and Practices
Daniela Hacke
Kommentar
In this course we look at cultural encounters that took place as a result of the European expansion during the early modern period. Cultural encounters are reflected in the many reports about the “New World” which formed part of an European imagery. Despite the imbalance of power between European and indigenous cultures, it has been argued that cultural encounters involved collective identities and enabled new forms of knowledge gathering and new practices of communication. In this course, I would like to discuss some of the most prominent concepts of cultural encounters and interculturality (e.g. Stephen Greenblatt, Mary Pratt) and verify them by discussing reports about early settlements in North America and diplomatic encounters in Asia.
