WiSe 19/20: Res gestae divi Augusti

The "Res gestae divi Augusti", written by Augustus (63 BC - 14 AD) at the end of his life, is usually classified in modern research as an "Tatenbericht“ (account report) or „Rechenschaftsbericht“ (accountability report). The first Roman emperor gives a first-person account of his political and military achievements and honors. The "Res gestae" were originally intended as an inscription on bronze pillars before the Mausoleum of Augustus, but have survived only as fragments - sometimes in Greek translation - in various places in the Roman Empire.
In the seminar, the text should be read, analyzed and discussed together in a moderated form. A source reader with translation of the "Res gestae", important parallel texts and bibliography will be provided at the beginning of the seminar.
There are several good editions, translations and commentaries. Of particular importance are those of Theodor Mommsen, Hans Volkmann, John Scheid and Klaus Bringmann / Dirk Wiegandt. A cheap edition by Marion Giebel is available as a Reclam paperback.
The acquisition of a „Schein“ requires regular participation and provision of the written and oral services specified in the respective examination and study regulations.
