WiSe 19/20: Tatenberichte - Report of the deeds by ancient rulers

The "Tatenbericht" is a literary genre typical but not strictly defined for antiquity. As a rule, thes „reports of the deeds“ have been published in the form of an inscription by ancient rulers or politicians in order to document and justify their political and military actions to the public. The representation in the "I-form" is widespread. Therefore, there are historical, autobiographical, apologetic and propagandistic elements. Already ancient kings of the 3rd millennium wrote „Tatenberichte“ and thus established a tradition which can be traced to late antiquity (eg, in the trilingue of the Axumite ruler Ezana in the 4th century). Among the best known examples are the so-called Behistun inscription of the Achaemenid king Dareios and the "Res gestae divi Augusti" of the first Roman Emperor Augustus.
In the seminar, a selection of „Tatenberichte“ from different cultures and times will be analyzed, compared and interpreted through joint reading moderated by the course leader. A source reader (with the translated texts) and a bibliography of modern secondary literature (which rarely deals with comparative aspects) will be made available at the beginning of the seminar.
The acquisition of a „Schein“ requires regular participation and provision of the written and oral services specified in the respective examination and study regulations.
Working language in this course is German.
