Every artwork can be discussed in various ways and viewed in different perspectives. This seminar focuses on viewing East Asian art and its objects from a transcultural perspective. The goal of this seminar is to train students to be able to describe the object, to analyze the object, to effectively collect research materials, as well as to find out its transcultural context and to make reasonable interpretation(s). Each session will focus on one art category or one specific type as case study, including Buddhist art, painting, lacquerware, celadon, Jian ware, blue & white porcelain, painted enamel & glass, textile, and print. The seminar puts the artworks into the transcultural context(s) to showcase the complicated networks of East Asian art, its transcultural dynamic not only within East Asian cultural circle but in some cases also involving Islamic & European context.
