The seminar will use both English and German texts. We will negotiate the course language (English or German) together in the first session, regarding the course participants.
In this seminar, we will search for educational-sociological perspectives on societal crises and the respective effects.
During the first half of the seminar, we introduce the concepts of “risk”, “crisis”, “plurality” and “uncertainty” (e.g. Beck 1986, 2006; Giddens 1994) on the one hand, and discuss classical and contemporary theories on socialisation. With the help of this, we try to derive potential challenges for young people and adults in times of crisis. This will occur through input and exchange (12.11. digital), through reading/listening and discussion of texts/podcasts (26.11. & 10.12. in small groups at the FU campus) and through accompanying group work including an interim presentation (14.01. digital).
We will dedicate the second part of the semester to the question of pedagogic approaches that might support individuals in times of societal crisis. Therefore, students work individually on a self-chosen focus subject (topic, target group, pedagogic approach). There will be colloquia for the respective focus subjects (28.01. & 11.02. digital). We will jointly summarize the semester on the 25th of February (digital). close
