Cassius Dio (c. AD 163-229) composed a Roman history in 80 volumes from the viewpoint of a Roman senator. Though only partially preserved Dio’s work is a treasure trove for historians as it often constitutes our sole source for important political events, in particular for the principate. Studying Dio’s work in its entirety is rewarding, and an impression of a proud Roman senator from Asia Minor emerges, who describes the long road from the republic to the principate not only with fascination but also with criticism. In this course we deal with Dio as an historian of political history, for which reason we shall be reading large parts of the preserved volumes. close
