Reading Course
WiSe 20/21: Reading poetry from Syria from the years around 2011
Victoria Mummelthei
Comments
Since 2011, Syria has repeatedly been at the centre of public interest due to political events. The reading course deals with poems by Syrian poets of different generations, which have been written in the last few years, before and after the beginning of the 'revolution'. The intensive examination of the literary texts enables a differentiated view of the conditions in the country, of individual experiences and attitudes, but also takes into account the different formal and aesthetic positions. The texts will be prepared by the participants and translated into German or English before they are discussed in the seminar, both linguistically and in terms of content, with the focus on literary translation. In addition to linguistically appropriate rendition and alternative formulations, general questions of literary translation will also be discussed, such as the extent to which it is legitimate or even necessary to adapt the translation with regard to the readers (or listeners) of the respective target language. The seminar can also be credited for the module "Literature II" by arrangement. close
