WiSe 20/21: Imperial biographies: experiences and worldviews in the 1860s to 1880s

Hannes Grandits

Comments

The structural context of empires made up the mental horizon of the people who during their life courses and professional careers lived or worked at various locations within an empire. In this seminar it is intended to discuss personal experiences of the heterogeneity of imperial space and the individual’s attempts to make sense of one’s own place in a rapidly changing world. We will be dealing with “imperial biographies” by focusing on the 1860s to 1880s. A starting focus will be on the Balkans/Near East in the period of the so-called Great Oriental Crisis. In a second round we will try to place the insights from these regional contexs into further global comparisons. The general question of this seminar is: what can be learned by approaching history with a decidedly “biographical approach”? close
