WiSe 20/21: Islamism and Pan-Islamism in History

Timothy Nunan

Comments

This seminar explores the history of Islamism and pan-Islamism in the twentieth century, when, in the face of Western imperialism and the Cold War, Muslim intellectuals sought to transform Islam into an ideology capable of keeping pace in an age of mass mobilization and ideological geopolitics. After a brief overview of nineteenth-century inheritances, we will focus on transformations in Islamist and pan-Islamist thought in the years after 1945. Some of the topics that we will explore include: the place of women’s rights and human rights in Islamist thought; events like the Iranian Revolution, the Soviet-Afghan War and the Bosnian War; and shifts in Islamist internationalism (Saudi Arabia, Iran, global jihadism). Working closely with translations of primary sources, students will leave the class better equipped to integrate non-Western voices into global history as well as to understand how concepts of “race” and “civilization” have shaped the modern world. All readings for this seminar are in English. close
