Comments
This seminar introduces students to the range of historical studies on political crime and transnational security regimes from late 19th century to early 20th century. The seminar aims at discussing the changing definitions of political crime, which are mostly considered as transnational crimes, and the responses of the legal systems with a critical security approach. Different manifestations of political violence in different countries, jurisdification, the institutionalization of police forces and, judicial and policing practices will be analyzed in four layers: threat perceptions, state actors, norms, technology. During the last two decades, a new discussion on political violence and transnational security regimes has emerged through the history of anarchism, police cooperation, extradition treaties, etc. However, this literature mostly focused on the European sphere. This seminar will also widen the discussion on these issues with putting Ottoman Empire in the center of these discussions. This seminar will be based on the readings and online discussions. close
