This seminar assumes some familiarity with modern Chinese history as well as contemporary politics. Ideally, students will have previously completed a China-focused seminar.

The advent of digital technologies is transforming politics in democratic systems around the globe. These technologies also have profound implications for political life in non-democracies. This seminar explores the emergence of digital authoritarianism in the People’s Republic of China. Early sessions consider, first, how authoritarian politics works before examining debate about the emancipatory vs. repressive potential of digital technologies in such contexts. Later sessions look in more detail at topics such as citizen expression on Chinese social media, digital nationalism and the scope for dissent. close
