WiSe 22/23: The Berlin Congress of 1878 and the Emergence of a New Global Imperialism
Hannes Grandits
Kommentar
The aim of this seminar is to discuss why the Berlin Congress of 1878 played such a central role in establishing an "age of imperialism" in the last quarter of the 19th century (and why, for example, the German Empire wanted to become a "colonial empire" soon afterwards). To this end, we will first recapitulate the great Oriental crisis of the 1870s. Then we will look in detail at the "zeitgeist" in which the Congress took place. Above all, however, we will look at how a newly conceived European imperialism was able to establish itself in the regional/local realities, first in the Orient and eventually far beyond in other regions of the world.
