WiSe 22/23: PS-Surveying English Literatures: Re-Writing the Past
Wolfram Keller
Comments
Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in the rewriting of premodern works, especially, but not exclusively, the classics. In this seminar, we shall read different British and Canadian literary works that are set in Greek or Roman antiquity as well as Britain’s remote past. The focus of the seminar will be on the ways in which contemporary books—like Bernardine Evaristo’s The Emperor’s Babe (2001), Margaret Atwood’s Penelopiad (2005), Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls (2018), or Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant (2016)—represent and construct various antiquities, and how the latter speaks to present ideological and aesthetic concerns. close
