WiSe 22/23: V-Literatures of Medieval Britain: Late Medieval English Literature
Wolfram Keller
Comments
This lecture focuses on English literature written in the long fifteenth century, that is, late-medieval English literature written between the Age of Chaucer and the Age of Shakespeare. A few introductory sessions will be devoted to questions of periodization, the construction of temporalities, and scholarly views on fifteenth-century literature. We will then work our way backwards from William Shakespeare to Geoffrey Chaucer (from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Troilus and Cressida to The Knight’s Tale and Troilus and Criseyde), before we move ‘forwards’ again to Shakespeare, reading dream poetry by Chaucer, John Lydgate, Gavin Douglas, Stephen Hawes, and John Skelton. close
