Colonialism and capitalism are entangled in fundamental ways. In this course, we will explore the ongoing relationship between colonialism and capitalism through an anthropological lens. In order to understand the workings of colonialism and capitalism in the longue durée, we will discuss the constitutive relationship of slavery and capitalism, try to understand the ongoing raced, classed and gendered logics of the plantation for global economies, engage with “world systems theory” and “dependency theory” in fresh ways, and discuss specific analytical frames such as “racial capitalism”, “the colonial mode of production”, “racial regimes of property”, and “gendered extractivism”. During this course, we keep a close eye on the urgent political relevance of these topics, not least by scrutinizing “race versus class” as a dividing line in transformative politics.
