Elena Korshenko
Comments
As a course complementary to the seminar “Alternative Japan: Lifestyles, subcultures and activism”, this tutorial aims at building up practical skills necessary for working with Japanese sources and academic writing. The tutorial has a threefold purpose. Firstly, using a variety of recent materials in Japanese it will illustrate the contents of the seminar and cover contemporary issues related to the subject. Original sources of different types and complexity will be employed to this end, including academic papers, newspaper articles, social media posts and surveys. Secondly, the tutorial will hone the techniques for effectively working with these materials and using them in research. It will look at both primary and secondary sources to discuss such topics as critical evaluation of texts, their use as research material, content analysis and data visualisation. Lastly, the tutorial will help to acquire and expand specialised Japanese vocabulary useful for dealing with the seminar topics.
