Comments
"East" is a relative geographical quantity, "Orient," on the other hand, an absolute cultural one. From a European - or "Western" - perspective, "Orient" is a "Near", "Middle" or "Far East" from North Africa to East Asia, perceived as foreign and exotic. More than 40 years ago, Edward Said's "Orientalism" was published, one of the most formative writings not only for the study of Arabic language, literature, and culture, but for postcolonial theories in general. In the seminar, we will take the text as the basis for a critical introduction to the focus area of Arabic Studies, looking in particular at the relationship between 'knowledge' and 'power' and using it to rework the information and historical facts presented in the associated lecture (Tuesdays 12-14). The focus is on reading primary or secondary literature and on written as well as oral engagement with the texts and media, for example in the form of discussions in the seminar. close
