WiSe 22/23: GK-Introduction to Cultural Studies
Sabine Schülting
Comments
The course will give an overview of the questions, main approaches, and terminology of Cultural Studies. After a clarification of what we mean when we speak of ‘culture’ and a brief sketch of the historical development of (British) Cultural Studies, the course will focus on contemporary cultural phenomena (e.g. Brexit and Britishness, popular culture, cultural identity, constructions of gender and race etc.) as represented in different genres and media. These topics will serve as examples for introducing students to the basic theories and methods in Cultural Studies. The course will thus lay the foundation for the seminars in this module as well as in the “Culture – Gender – Media” module.
The course will be organised as a series of weekly lectures with discussion.
Exchange students are of course welcome. You can gain 2 ECTS for attendance and up to 5 ECTS (and a grade) if you pass a written exam, which will take place in the last week of the semester. There is no exam for students in the BA English Philology.
