WiSe 22/23: Diverging rationalities? Normative principles in the epistemic crisis
Florian Primig
Comments
Public discourse is tedious at times - even more so when those involved seem not be able to find common ground. This is not a phenomenon of the Internet per se, but digital public sphere(s) have accelerated the contestation of social norms and shifted our focus on phenomena of failed understanding that you all know (such as disinformation or hatespeech) and raises the question of the validity of common (rational) norms. In this course, we will draw on the normative canon of deliberation research and social epistemology to discuss mainly the concepts of truth, civility, and inclusion, their validity in the digital public sphere, and possible interventions to strengthen them.
By the end of the course, students will have an overview of rational public norms, their problems, and possible paths forward.
