WiSe 22/23: Multiculturalism: Theory and Research

Christian von Scheve

Comments

The term “multiculturalism” has come to refer to a broad variety of concepts and theories related to cultural pluralism and diversity, usually as a consequence of migration and transnational processes. Given that cultural pluralism and diversity have significant ramifications for issues of citizenship, minority rights, and social integration, a large part of the extant literature takes a political and/or philosophical stance, discussing conceptual issues as well as appropriate policies to address the challenges of multiculturalism. Aside from this largely normative literature, more recent research has started to address multiculturalism from an empirical perspective, investigating cross-national differences in cultural diversity and multicultural policies as well as their outcomes and behavioral consequences. The seminar follows this distinction. We will first learn about key theoretical approaches to multiculturalism and its political implications. This includes, in particular, communitarian, liberal, and deliberative accounts. Second, we will discuss political implications of multiculturalism with particular emphasis on multiculturalism and multicultural policies in Europe. Third, we will attend to selected empirical studies regarding outcomes and behavioral consequences of multiculturalism.
