This is a course on development economics and energy policy. The first part analyzes the microfoundations of economic development by focusing on growth theories, inequality, poverty and undernutrition as well as on population growth and their relation to economic development. Furthermore, we debate key issues in agricultural markets, land and rural development. In the second part of the course, we concentrate in the economics of energy markets with reference to the regulation of natural monopolies, extraction of nonrenewable resources, and regulation of oil, gas and electricity markets. Furthermore, we provide basic analytical tools in understanding the environmental aspects of energy and more specifically pollution control, fuel externalities, land allocation and forestry, fisheries and climate negotiations.
