For students of Islamic and Arabic Studies and ISME (with Arabic language skills), an accompanying Arabic reading course provides insights into the Arabic historiography of early Islam. The aim of the seminar and reading course is for the students to gain an overview of early Islamic history and at the same time to become familiar with the different theoretical approaches and key concepts informing the discipline of Islamic studies. close

Comments

The seminar conveys knowledge of the early history of Islam, from the lifetime of Muhammad to the Umayyad period, while simultaneously reflecting on the epistemological premisses of knowledge production with regard to this period. What data is our knowledge of Islam in Late Antiquity based on? What are the archives that researchers of this period cn rely on, and how do they interpret them? Which are the larger narratives informed by different empirical and theoretical approaches? Guided by questions such as these, key texts produced within the fields of Islamic studies and Early Islamic History are read and critically discussed - with regard to their theses, the archives and data they draw on, as well as the methods and theoretical approaches they use. close
