WiSe 22/23: (S The Historicity of Deliberation in the Arab and Muslim Worlds
Nora Lafi
Comments
The aim of this seminar is to examine under the lens of the notions of historicity, i.e. the complex relationship between a series of "presents" and a series of interpretation of various "pasts", the question of deliberative processes in the Arab world. The main idea is to challenge the inertia of Eurocentric chronologies and representations (often based upon paradigms of Import/Export) thanks to an attention to local practices in societies of the region: debate, decision-making processes, voting, conflict resolution, consensus building. In the seminar sessions, various key moments (various interpretation of medieval heritages, visions of the Ottoman classical era, interpretation of the Ottoman reforms, colonial visions of the past, present-day developments and interpretive controversies) will be analysed both as for the nature of such phenomena and the various layers of interpretation they mobilize. close
