Ling-ling Lien
Comments
One of the famous slogans in Maoist China is “women can hold up half the sky,” indicating that women’s status has improved a great deal after the Communist revolution. Does that slogan truly represent Chinese women’s situation? How did Chinese women come to this point from the so-called “oppressed position of victimhood”? How did Chinese women experience the process of “revolution and liberation”? To what extent did women participate in and benefit from the Chinese revolution? By answering these questions, this course will discuss what the Chinese revolution means from the perspective of women and gender history. close
