Comments
The emerging multinational corporation played a crucial role in driving and facilitating 19th century globalization. Firms like Siemens, General Electric and the Singer Manufacturing Company provided globalization’s infrastructural backbone, they organized international trade, knowledge transfer and they shaped consumption practices. This seminar will take a close look at the multinational corporations’ role in shaping globalization in the long 19th century prior to World War I.
The seminar’s first part will be devoted to theoretical and methodological basics regarding business and economic history. In the second part, students will develop case studies on specific corporations that may deal with a wide range of analytical foci such as business and labor, business and gender, business and kinship, business and trade, business and migration, business and technology.
