Comments
This reading class accompanies the seminar on "Ibn Khaldun's (d. 1406) theory of society and its reception". We will first engage Arabic receptions of Ibn Khaldhun and then focus on the Muqaddima itself. We will approach the text by reading sections of which we concomitantly use the English translation in the seminar. This helps with our own understanding of the Muqaddima, but is also intended to critically reflect upon whether the terms chosen in the translation are always adequate, not least in view of the trap of projecting back modern concepts into earlier texts. After familiarizing ourselves with the Muqaddima, participants will select different concepts/sets of terms whose usage and meaning they will probe into and present to the group, e.g. concepts of society, the state, religion, politics. Note: we will jointly decide in the first session whether the course will take place in English or German, depending on participants' language skills and preferences. Requirements: Completion of Arabic IV or equivalent; regular and active participation; two times excerpting central Arabic concepts from the common reading; once presenting one's own analysis of a chosen concept/set of terms. close
