Comments

The lecture course is taught by the faculty of all disciplines participating in ISME. It offers in-depth, interdisciplinary insights into the Near and Middle East as a field of research, as a region and as a space of cultural production. A variety of phenomena including language, cultural history, religion, and traditions of knowledge are up for discussion, especially regarding paradigms with historical implications, such as identity, gender, cultures of memory, nationalism, modernization, exile. The lecturer series is divided into two sections: in the first half of the semester, participating disciplines of ISME may introduce themselves and their topics, giving an overview of the relevant discipline; in the second hald of the semester, current research endeavors will be addressed. In both sections, the lecturers may contribute to the lecture’s overarching topic „Transfers and Translations“ in studying the Middle East. The lecture course consists of an introduction on October 31 (most probably hybrid online and on campus), weekly lectures with discussions (most probably on campus as of November), and a panel discussion on the topic of „Transfers and Translations“ in February 2023. In addition, a weekly reading will be assigned; the material is available through blackboard. close
