The course familiarizes participants with the diversity and interrelatedness of scholarly approaches indisciplines from the field of Interdisciplinary Studies of the Middle East. It makes participants aware of the intercultural and epistemological challenges to scholarly research on history, societies, cultures of text, cultures of knowledge, languages, and literature in that region. The course provides the par-ticipants with tools to assess research literature critically and with techniques to formulate complex research questions. Participants will also gain experience with presenting the results of their own research and analyses coherently and comprehensibly both in writing or orally. The first part of the course (until the winter break) is dedicated to research and writing skills. In thesecond part of the course, participants use these skills to analyze writings on central methodological issues for the approaches and methods used and explore how they can incorporate these into their own research and writing.This is a writing intensive course. Participants will be asked to submit brief weekly written assignments that will allow them to prepare for or apply the topic of the week in order to prepare for the final written assignment of the course. close
