WiSe 22/23: Poetics of Hip Hop – A challenge for literary theory

The tutorial aims to understand hip-hop from the perspective of general and comparative literature. By conceptualizing rap as a multimedia hybrid genre, we assume that the analysis of poetry is not capable of grasping rap in its entirety. In consequence, we would like to explore the challenges that dealing with hip-hop poses to literary studies. Which theories and terms need to be revised/expanded in order to adequately describe rap? In weekly in-person sessions, we will use selected songs and theoretical texts (from Germany and the US) to discuss central literary terms in relation to rap – e.g. rhyme, rhythm, authorship, edition, intertextuality and intermediality.
The tutorial is aimed at advanced students of all literary studies and philologies as well as students of related disciplines – such as music-, film-, theater studies, etc. Everybody who is interested in participating can come to the first session. We will meet on Tuesday the 18th of October at the FU in the room KL 29/235.
