Seminar
WiSe 22/23: Routes and Travels
Reinhard Bernbeck
Comments
In this seminar we will discuss concepts and theories that concern „routes“ in the widest sense, including material cases. As comprehensively laid out in an acclaimed book by James Clifford, routes encompass intellectual paths and "traveling concepts" that range from translation activity to interdisciplinarity in the sciences. At the same time, we find „routes“ everywhere in practical and material spheres of life in the past: in subsistence (nomads), in exchange (trade routes by land and sea), in war (military campaign trails, deportation), in religion (pilgrimages, journeys of deities), in states of emergency (immigration/emigration, flight, diaspora, deportation), and in quotidian communication along paths that are co-determined by topography.
The seminar program will start with abstract theoretical and methodological issues and progress to case studies that students will choose according to their interests. Students from the University of Copenhagen will work in parallel on the same topic and visit Berlin in the fall to present their results in a colloquium at the Freie Universität. At the end of the semester, the seminar participants will travel to Copenhagen and present their work in a colloquium there.
