The new Berlin master program Archaeology of the Ancient World brings together three disciplines – Prehistory, the Archaeology of Near Eastern Asia and Classical Archaeology – to approach the Past of Northern Africa, Southwestern Asia and Europe via a multi-focus perspective. The participants come from various countries and even several continents, having passed BA programs and received archaeological training in quite different archaeological disciplines and regional research traditions. The Introductionary course aims at exploring the archaeological understanding of the participants and intends to establish a cross-cultural basis for the Berlin AAW multifocal approach to archaeology. It will comprise a systematic review of archaeological sources (settlement and burial evidence etc.) and their retrieval (remote sensing, prospection, fieldwalking, excavation etc.). It will also discuss core concepts of archaeological methodology, such as time, chronology, space, culture and society and will offer brief overviews over actual methods, both pluridisciplinary (bioarchaeology, social and economic archaeology) as well as specific to archaeology (taxonomy, seriation, stratigraphy, site formation). The course will be held partly as lecture, partly as interactive course, reflecting the diversity of archaeological experience of its participants and is accomplished by a weekly seminar, taking place on Mondays 16-18 in lecture room -1.2057. Both the lecture and the seminar are compulsory for students of this master course. close
