SoSe 15: S-History of English II
Martin Konvicka
Kommentar
In this course, as the title already says, the (internal and external) history of the English language will stand in the centre of our attention. We will focus, amongst other things, on the (more or less) subtle changes in phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics in order to address our core question of how Ænglisc became English.
The discussion of the concrete linguistic phenomena and processes will be expanded by debates about their broader theoretical context, i.e. the concrete changes in English will be studied in the light of more general historical tendencies.
To achieve the goals described above, we will work with authentic historical texts on the one hand and also discuss theoretical approaches to the phenomenon of language change on the other hand. Furthermore, the history of the English language will also be looked at from a comparative perspective, i.e. the situation in English will be contrasted with developments in other Germanic languages such as the Scandinavian languages, German or Dutch.
Requirements: regular attendance, regular preparation, active participation in discussions, regular smaller homework assignments, short oral presentation, writing a term paper at the end of the semester.
